Cheddar cheese is a British cheese, originating from the English village of Cheddar in Somerset, southwest England.

Simplest Cooking

Cheese is ready to eat but can also be melted to eat.

Classic Dishes

British & American

Cheddar cheese is the default cheese in the UK, and second default in the United States. Technically you can take it as Cheddar cheese where cheese is shown in recipes.

  1. Cheese Sandwiches: cheese can be added in sandwiches.
    • Cheese Sandwich: pure cheese slice sandwich, without any sauce or even butter.
    • Grilled Cheese Sandwich: melted cheese slice sandwich. You can make a cheese sandwich, spread some butter and mayo on the bread surface and pan fry the whole thing. The cheese will melt and the bread will make crust at the same time.
  2. Burger: any burger can add some cheese filling
  3. Cheddar Cheese Sauce: a mixture of flour, cheese, milk, salt and pepper. Used as dip or mixed with cooked veg. Good for dealing with leftover cheese and milk.
  4. Mac and Cheese: a classic American dish. Make cheese sauce, pour on boiled macaroni pasta, bake in the oven.
  5. Cauliflower Cheese: a classic British vegetarian dish. make cheese sauce, pour on boiled cauliflower florets, bake in the oven.
  6. Fish Pie: a classic British dish. Make cheese sauce. Poach fish, veg mixed with milk and flour for thickening, top with mashed potato, bake in the oven. Cheddar cheese can be used in the base for thickening, and making crust on top.

Purchase Advice

Cheddar cheese is a British thing so there are many kinds in the British supermarket. They are usually categorised by maturity: mild / mature / extra mature. The more mature, the stronger flavour.
