I’ve hit loads of subscribe buttons in all kinds of content creator platforms, including primarily YouTube and Bilibili, also X (former Twitter), TikTok, Instagram. The content creators try their best to attract you to hit the button but lately I found it’s a complete mess to keep track of them. For example, most of my spare time on YouTube is spent on the very few channels I watched frequently, and I have to go through the entire list sometimes to find something new. For a long time I equate subscribe buttons with bookmarks, where subscriptions just lost its meaning and add chaos.
At the same time I found it confusing to manage multiple platforms. Most famous content creators have their publicity matrices across various platforms. Given that I don’t wanna follow them in all platforms, I have to take extra energy to remember which platform I have subscribed.
Inspired by my former roommate who always browses in a PC browser, I think an aggregated page to collect all the content creators I know or follow in my website would be a good idea. This serves as a portal for me to browse the Internet, and also a way to share my favourites and comments with you.
It is definitely more flexible to organise in my own page than in the Apps. For example, YouTube doesn’t support categorising subscriptions which was an experimental feature but cancelled, unless you use third-party browser extensions like PocketTube. And you might also think it’s such an outdated way, but it frees me from the Apps, the trap of recommendation algorithms and endless time on mobiles. I found my roommate kept a regular daily schedule and a clear mind of what information he needed to know at the moment, through his way. It can probably change one’s mindset about digital products from a source of feeding our addiction to a tool to get information efficiently. Yes, a healthier life, why not give it a go?
